The times have changed, and continue to do so, today there are more men than ever who have sole or joint custody of their kids for whatever reason. Men are often more hands on in the child rearing department than they used to be. It is increasingly common to find out the guy you are interested in is a dad. And, there can be some unique challenges to dating men with children.
In this article I will explore some possible pitfalls, and how to avoid them, of dating men with children. By paying attention to these tips it may make it easier for you to have a successful relationship with that guy you meet who just happens to be a dad.
And, truthfully, if you don’t think you can live by one or more of these tips, you may decide it would be best to stay away from dating guys with kids.
Here are some things to take into consideration:
1. First of all, a parents schedule can be erratic. For example, you and your guy may have a great weekend planned but suddenly he has to go on "dad duty".
Sometimes kids get sick and have to stay home from school. There are often last minute schedule changes that occur when you are a parent. How will you react if he has to postpone a date because one of his kids gets sick?
Will it make you mad or hurt? If so, dating a dad may not be the best choice for you.
On the other hand, depending on the situation, you may volunteer to help out. Perhaps you could take over some dinner for him and his kids while he is caring for his sick child. Perhaps you could spell him and watch his child while he gets a little rest.
If that sounds good to you, you may just have the perfect personality for dating a man with children.
2. Do you even like children? This can be an acquired taste. When I was young I didn’t enjoy children at all, personally, they kind of got on my nerves! Now, though, after having my own kids not to mention nieces and nephews and now even some grandchildren, I love kids.
I love spending time with them and playing with them. So, if you’re not sure if you even like kids you may want to go very slowly until you know for sure.
A good dad will want to make sure that any woman he dates likes his kids too.
3. Be fun. As a parent, he will have a lot on his plate. Taking time to unwind and just have fun will be very important to him and he will want to be able to share that down time with someone who has similar interests to him.
Just being someone he can relax with and have fun with will be very important to him.
Dating men with children can be a great experience, but it’s not without it’s challenges. If you are at a point where you are ready to find "the one" to settle down with, and if you’re ok with kids, this type of guy may be perfect for you.
